Successes and Trial Victories

The Richard Law Firm was created to help people secure justice using our legal system.

Wren v. Stallion Springs Police Department

In this wrongful death case The Richard Law Firm was brought in to help California counsel get justice for Calvin Wren’s widow and his four children.  Mr. Wren was killed by a police officer who ran through a red light.  The officer claimed that he was in the middle of a high-speed chase but the evidence showed that he was merely providing back-up for a stop of a parole violator who was suspected of being involved in drug use and stealing mail.  Had the officer slowed at the intersection and followed appropriate safety rules Mr. Wren might still be with us.  This case was settled on the eve of trial.  Ms. Richard and her co-counsel, Daniel Rodriquez obtained a successful settlement for Mr. Wren’s widow and family.

Construction Defect—A Record Jury Verdict

In October and November 2008, The Richard Law Firm tried a construction-defect case against an out-of-state contractor and its insurance company. At issue was an improperly constructed (unanchored) façade wall that was structurally unsound and was losing stones. The settlement offer before trial was $100,000. At trial, the jury found the contactor 100% liable and awarded the client $900,000. This was a terrific victory for our client and one of the largest jury verdicts in Teton County.

Standing Up to Large Government Entities

Our firm was lead counsel to a local property owner who sought to build some improvements on property he had purchased. The County Land Use Regulations provided that he had an entitlement to use the property for his intended purpose. After initially approving the project, the Teton County Board of County Commissioners later reversed its vote . Our firm successfully challenged the action by the Board and sought a review of the decision in District Court. The District Court agreed with our position and found that the County had acted in an arbitrary and capricious fashion. [Decision Letter link]

A note about settlements:

If a law firm’s website lists only settlements, it may be that they are not interested or focused on trying cases. An attorney should be willing and able to take the best approach—whether through settlement or trial—to achieve the optimal result for a client. Our firm is prepared to do that.
